Zion National Park, Utah, Lower Subway Panorama–2: The hike down Subway canyon is over 9 miles with occasional ice cold water to swim through and several cliffs to repel down. But the hardest part of the hike is the last one half mile where the mountain is so steep you can reach out in front of you and touch the trail. I don’t recommend this hike without my brother-in-law, Chad, who is a master of the subway. The reward for this effort is apparent. Zion National Park, Utah, Upper Subway Panorama–1: If you’re going to hike 9 miles through icy water, over cliffs and up steep mountains with a heavy backpack laden with camera equipment, it better be worth the effort. To make sure this hike met that criterion, my uncle Brent and I remained behind the rest of our party to wait for just the right light in the Upper Subway.
